Press Release from Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency

Iceberg Quest Ocean Tours innovative use of social media to attract clients and the quality of their new interactive website earned the company top honours when they were presented with the Tourism Atlantic Technology Award at an industry luncheon hosted by Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador.

“The economy is our Government’s top priority,” said the Honourable Keith Ashfield, Minister of National Revenue, Minister of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Minister for the Atlantic Gateway.” We understand the significant role tourism plays in the Atlantic Canadian economy and the importance of recognizing best practices within the industry, including the innovative use of technology by operators to grow their business.”

Iceberg Quest Ocean Tours operates from ports in St. John’s and Twillingate, and offers tours to view icebergs, humpbacks and seabirds. The company launched an interactive website in 2010 which allows the public to view a real time countdown of tour departures. The new site also gives people access to online reservations. Iceberg Quest Ocean Tours has incoporated the use of social media into the new website through Facebook, Twitter and a blogging section.

“We are very excited to be named this year’s winner of the Tourism Atlantic Technology Award,” said Barry Rogers, President of Iceberg Quest Ocean Tours. “With the launch of our new interactive website, we hope to not only have an increase in visitation but also help tourists plan their vacations with as much ease as possible.”

ACOA created the Tourism Atlantic Technology Award in 2004 to recognize one tourism operator in each Atlantic province for their innovation and the strategic use of technology to benefit both the individual business and the wider tourism industry.

The award was presented at the Gala Dinner, which is the closing event at Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador’s annual conference.

The Government of Canada, through ACOA, supports the development of a strong tourism sector in Atlantic Canada through a pan-Atlantic approach that emphasizes research, product development and marketing.
